Therapeutics which may be independently prescribed, ordered and administered by a midwife with specialized practice certification or which may be administered after consulting with and on the order of a physician

Acupuncture is an act of stimulation, by means of needles, of specific sites on the skin, mucous membranes or subcutaneous tissue of the human body. Acupuncture has a role in the management of pain and can be beneficial for clients in labour or during the immediate postpartum period.

Midwives who administer acupuncture:

  1. Are required to obtain specialized practice certification in this area from CMBC. An approved certification program is in place. For more information, please refer to the Framework for Midwives Certification in Acupuncture Use in Labour and the Immediate Postpartum.
  2. May only administer acupuncture use for the purpose of pain relief during:
    1. labour; and/or
    2. the first 24 hours
  3. Must not delay standard of care in emergency situations and/or where consultation is indicated, with acupuncture treatments.
  4. Must maintain competency by administering a minimum of three acupuncture treatments every 24 months.
