Uterotonic agents

Oxytocics and other uterotonics are to be administered for the management of postpartum bleeding on the registrant’s own responsibility. The choice of agent and method of administration will be dependent upon the clinical scenario and availability of these medications.

In an out-of-hospital setting, initiating emergency transport to hospital should be considered early in the treatment of a postpartum hemorrhage[49].

49. It is beyond the scope of this document to outline the complete steps in the management of a postpartum hemorrhage. Midwives are expected to initiate the appropriate steps in the management of a postpartum hemorrhage according to their Emergency Skills protocol and are reminded that hemorrhage unresponsive to therapy is an indication for transfer of care to a physician.
