Standards for Administering Controlled Substances

Midwives may administer controlled substance on their own order or as ordered by a medical practitioner (physician or nurse practitioner). When doing so, they must:

  1. Provide and document ongoing assessments.
  2. Monitor and document the client’s response to the controlled substance.
  3. Communicate the client’s response and change to or discontinuation of therapy to the ordering medical practitioner as appropriate.
  4. Consult with the ordering medical practitioner at any point as required.
