Fosfomycin Tromethamine

Midwives may independently prescribe, order and administer this drug.

Fosfomycin tromethamine is an antibiotic that inhibits peptidoglycan synthesis and is bactericidal in urine.

Indications and Clinical Use:

A single dose treatment for uncomplicated cystitis in pregnancy or postpartum caused by susceptible strains of Escherichia coli or Enterococcus faecalis. Consider using when compliance with multiple dose treatment regimes may be an issue.

Contraindications:

History of hypersensitivity to fosfomycin or any components of the formulation.

Warnings and Precautions:

Prolonged use may result in fungal or bacterial superinfection, including C. difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD) and pseudomembranous colitis. Contains sucrose.

Dosage and Administration:

Cystitis: 3g PO single dose sachet. Add the contents of the single dose sachet to 90-120ml
                  cool water, stir and drink immediately. Take on an empty stomach.

Check with the dispensing pharmacy regarding availability before prescribing.

5.7 hours

Elimination:

Eliminated in urine and feces
